Talking B*****ks (Hitler's)

As a typical example of a saturday morning conversation in our 'ouse - this is the flavour of today's subjects:

We started off talking about a cheat for The Sims called 'rosebud'. This lead on to discussing Citizen Kane which Grum described as 'iconoclastic', which then lead on to a discussion of the meaning of the term. Then we found a clip of the 'rosebud' opening scene on YouTube, and then Kimmy found Hearst Castle (which 'appears' in the film) info on wiki. Then whilst having breakfast (eggs!) there was a discussion about one egg or two eggs, which in German is einei which lead on to discussing the quantity and quality of Adolf Hitler's testicles, which again lead to a wiki search where we found an article entitled Hitler has only got one ball. As we were then having our 2nd cup of coffee this morning - Hari commented that she doesn't like the smell of coffee, Kim then mentioned that she'd been drinking coffee since she was a child in the form of Camp coffee. Another wiki search bore out her assumption that this was an Imperial preparation consumed in military camps - this then prompted a search on Google images for a photo of the bottle! During this search, we ended up on an American website selling British goods in the US, and noticed that you can get Cadbury's dairy milk stateside via this site. Hari was intrigued to know why anyone would want to get this chocolate in the States, as 'didn't they have any of their own'. Kim then explained that American chocolate was different to ours, and was yuck! The only chocolate that came close was Ghiradelli - made in San Francisco - and that she'd been to the factory in SF. This again brought us back to the pc, and a search for Ghiradelli's website........

Dylan's latest preoccupation

Dylan announced today that he could remember when he was a fish.

We had been talking about evolution, and how we had evolved over millenia, when he asked did we start as fishes, then grow an arm one week, then another arm the next week etc. He found it hard to grasp the enormity of Geological time.

He then asked were we monkeys last week.

He now thinks " a long long time ago, cavemen were little moobas that live in the sea. It took millions of years for them to turn into fish. Then it took another million years . The fish growed legs then another million years they turned into humans. That's how the caveman came."

Not bad, eh?

Walter Poole Terry

It's that time of the year to remember Walter Poole Terry, my Great Grandfather, gassed in The Great War, died at home in the Mumbles four months after the Armistice.

I only really found out about Walter last year, when we were invited by Paul Terry, one of his other Great Grandchildren to attend the re-dedication of the Mumbles War Memorial, following the addition of his name, and others, who had not been recognised as war deaths for various reasons (died after the war, merchant seamen, not army/navy/raf etc).

We visited him at Oystermouth cemetery yesterday, and left a bunch of white flowers, for peace, in the hope that no-one in our family ever has to go through what he did. I'll post a piccie of his stone tomorrow.

The funny thing is that I never knew his story as a child. I walked within 10 feet of his grave every day for two years on the way to and from school, unaware of his presence. He must have been only with my great grandmother for a few years before being packed off to the front, spent years in france, and then died shortly after returning home. I guess he was a small part of her life, leaving her a young widow with identical twin boys, and a younger brother to raise alone.

She was one heck of a woman, Ma, as we knew her, and she took up a huge role in my brothers and my upbringing, as my parents were busy in the shop. Martin practically lived with her for weeks on end, and she lived until I was well into my teens. I'll remember her, too, today.

coal house

Would you like to see how some people lived just 80 years ago?

You should have watched Coal House from the Beeb.

Three families were transported back to the times when men worked down the pit, had to walk miles over the mountain to get there, and to find out if there was work that day or not. Not so long ago, really.

Sorry we missed it :(

the mind of a six year old (41 years on)

following the post on what goes through the mind of a six year old, My dear Aunt (she of the stories) told us a tale of what was going through the mind of this six year old.

Apparently, Margaret collected a new kitten for home, and in the way back, asked a young CDH what would be a good name for it.

After pondering, I replied "Rover"

The poor cat was duly named Rover, but kindly referred to as "cat" from then on

No such thing as a free lunch?

Thanks to the beeb, I've just downloaded Radiohead's new album buckshee, here, in rainbows.

The significant thing being that you get to say how much you want to pay for the download only music, by entering an ammount in the price box. I of course, entered zero, as I am a tight welshman

It remains to be seen if I overvalued the tunes..........
