It's the little differences
For me, its the little differences that make travel fun. Trying to get by in a different language, understanding how bus queues work, what a bemo is, how to haggle, how to say thank you in a different way, how to drink your coffee. I love it.
In the States, for example, trying to buy sweetener tablets was a little different. I tried to explain what I wanted to a member of staff in Walmart, then realised that she had very little english. I tried again in my broken spanish, and through the medium of interpretive dance, but to no avail. All I got was blank looks. I then assumed she was an idiot. Frustrated, i marched off, & tried again with another staff member. I failed again.
What I didn't know, was that I was asking for something outside their comprehension. Apparently, they don't have sweetener tablets in the States. They have powder, boxes of the stuff, or hand grenade size vials of liquid sweetener. Who knew?
Later in Denny's , I found out that they even have 3 types of sweetener powder! Saccharin, aspartame, or sucralose! Talk about choice.
